You have felt it. That sense, just behind the world’s paperwork, that there is something older than all these names and forms. The Bureau files everything in its place, but underneath, there is a wordless ground you can’t quite file away.
Hall calls it Ain Soph. The boundless. The root before roots. In the old Kabbalah, they would not leave God as a bearded judge on a throne. They followed the question down, past every shape and story, to a power “eternal and immovable.” No beginning, no end. A cause that was never caused.
He breaks it in three steps. First, Ain — pure being, forever. Out of Ain, Ain Soph — boundless life. Out of Ain Soph, Ain Soph Aur — boundless light. Being, life, light. The basic triad. Hall points out the Buddhists found the same three, and Laozi called it the Tao. The difference is only the difference of language.
If the root of things is boundless, then God is not here instead of there. Not a person, not a place. Hall says God is everywhere, diffused down to the atom, so that all things “live and move and have their being” inside that one likeness. The far-off cause turns out to be the nearest thing. Closer than a name.
The Bureau files the world over this older order. It hands you endings — be this, be that, be acceptable. But under every file, the word before words is still there. IAM. You say it every morning: I am tired, I am late, I am someone with somewhere to be. But stop at the second word. I am. That much was already true before you added anything. That much needs no ending.
Hall taught that the true name of God was written but never spoken. The Tetragrammaton, with another word slipped over it, so the real sound stayed hidden. Because in the old thinking, a name was the thing. And a name meaning only “I am” was too large to say aloud.
This is the infinite essence. Not a thing built by an outside hand, but a manifestation — a state arising within an unconditioned nature. One indivisible being, present everywhere at once. The soil creation grows in. It has no form, no shadow. You cannot define it. You can only admit it is there, the reason anything at all can be.
Light is its first movement. Not just what lets the eye see, but the medium all existence is suspended in. Hall calls it a sea of spiritual light. The outer light sustains the body. The inner light nourishes the soul. To grow is to become sensitive to finer and finer degrees of it.
The old Kabbalists said creation is not a set of acts, but a single current, stepping down through denser forms. Light losing brightness the further it travels from its source, until at the far edge it grows so dim it looks like nothing. Nothing is added, nothing is lost. The world is the one light, thinned.
So what is Ain Soph? It is the limitless light before all form. The word before words. The cause that was never caused. The thing too alive to be catalogued. When you understand this — not just know it, but feel it in the mind and the heart at once — a brick goes missing from a wall that was never real.
