A question worth sitting with

What is Return, Hexagram 24 — the turn of the year, the light coming back at the darkest point?

You know this feeling. The darkest point, when the year seems sunk and the light is gone. But something shifts. Not much — just a sense, a thread under the door. That is Return.

You know this feeling. The darkest point, when the year seems sunk and the light is gone. But something shifts. Not much — just a sense, a thread under the door. That is Return.

Hexagram 24, Fu — the turn. The I Ching shows it as one strong line, newborn, at the very bottom. Five yielding lines above it. Thunder buried deep in the earth, gathering itself. The light is not out. It is hidden, waiting to rise.

The Judgment says: the light is coming back. Movement is free again. Friends arrive. No harm. The path turns and returns on itself; in seven days the return comes round. Now it is good to set out.

The Image says: thunder in the middle of the earth. The old kings, seeing this, would close the gates at the winter solstice. Merchants stopped their journeys. Princes stayed home. The world paused. Even the Bureau would file nothing new, just for a moment. The turning is quiet.

Return is not a leap. It is a small thing at first. The sun has not risen; it has only stopped sinking. You do not force the new line. You notice it. You let it gather.

The teaching is simple: when the light is lowest, it is already turning. There is no need to rush. No need to mourn. The way comes back around. Friends come. The harm is past.

So when you find yourself at the bottom, do not push. Wait for the thread. The return is already working. The year turns, and the buried thunder will rise.

Not everything needs to be made new. Sometimes, it is enough to notice what is coming back.
